Making your own guacamole

There's nothing quite as addictive as the creamy, rich texture and flavor of homemade guacamole. While you can buy pre-made guacamole in almost any supermarket these days, nothing quite matches the taste of homemade guacamole. Not only is it a great and healthy dip, but it can also be a tasty addition to your meal. So why not try making this delicious delicacy at home?

What is guacamole anyway?

Guacamole, an iconic dish from Mexican cuisine, is a spicy, green dip made with ripe avocados and often seasoned with lime, salt, shallots, jalapeños, tomatoes, and cilantro. The name "guacamole" comes from the ancient Aztec words "ahuacatl" (avocado) and "molli" (sauce). Each region, and often each family, in Mexico has its own variation of the recipe. However, the foundation always remains the same: creamy, ripe avocados. A good guacamole always starts with a high-quality avocado, preferably the Hass variety. The other ingredients, such as tomatoes, onions, cilantro, and seeds like jalapeños, mainly serve to accentuate the creamy flavor of the avocado.

How do you make guacamole?

The secret to good guacamole lies in its simplicity; don't overload it with extra flavors, but keep it pure. Start by halving the avocados and removing the pits. Mash the flesh in a bowl to the desired consistency. For authentic guacamole, keep the dip somewhat chunky. Then it's time to add flavor. Add a pinch of salt, the juice of a lime, a finely chopped shallot, a crushed garlic clove, and a chopped jalapeño for added heat. Don't forget the fresh, roughly chopped cilantro for an authentic flavor!

How do you store guacamole?

While it's best to consume your guacamole immediately after making it, you can also store it in the refrigerator for a day or two. Make sure the guacamole is tightly covered with plastic wrap, pressing it directly against the surface to minimize air exposure. This also slows down oxidation, which can lead to an unpleasant brown color. Another tip is to place an avocado pit in the guacamole. While this isn't a scientifically proven method, many swear by it for keeping their guacamole green.

Let's get started!

Nothing beats the taste of fresh, homemade guacamole. So why not try it at home? It's easy, quick, and requires no special cooking skills—plus, it's a great way to impress your friends at your next party or dinner party. And remember, cooking is meant to be fun!
