Making your own scones

Zelf scones maken

Anyone who's ever been to the United Kingdom has undoubtedly enjoyed the quintessential British afternoon tea with scones. But why wait until your next visit when you can make your own scones right in your own kitchen? Making your own scones is not only surprisingly easy but also produces an authentic treat you can share with family and friends. It's also satisfying to prepare a dish from scratch, from start to finish, and add your own personal touch.

What are scones anyway?

Scones are a relatively simple type of quick bread, originally from Scotland. They are primarily eaten during traditional afternoon tea. Scones consist simply of flour, sugar, baking powder, butter, milk, and a pinch of salt. They are often flavored with raisins, cranberries, chocolate, or other ingredients of your choice. A true scone has a slightly crumbly outer texture and a soft, almost cake-like interior. It's common to serve scones with clotted cream and jam for the ultimate British taste experience.

How do you make scones?

To make the scones, combine 250g of flour, 1 sachet of baking powder, 50g of cold butter, cubed, and a pinch of salt in a mixing bowl . Rub the butter into the flour mixture with your fingertips until crumbly. Add 50g of sugar and stir. Beat 150ml of milk with 1 egg and gradually pour this into the flour mixture, gently mixing everything together until a dough comes together (don't over-knead!). Roll out the dough to a thickness of 2-3cm and cut out circles with a cookie cutter or glass. Place the scones on a baking sheet lined with baking paper, brush them with a little milk for a shiny top, and bake in a preheated oven at 200°C (400°F) for 12-15 minutes, or until lightly golden brown. Serve warm with clotted cream and jam . Enjoy!

How do you store scones?

If you're not eating the scones immediately, it's important to store them properly to keep them fresh. Let the scones cool completely before storing them. Place them in an airtight container and store them at room temperature. You can also freeze scones. Wrap them individually in plastic wrap and place them in a freezer bag. This way, they'll keep for up to 3 months. To thaw, leave them in the refrigerator overnight.

Delicious variations on scones

You can experiment with variations to make the recipe a bit more exciting. A favorite alternative ingredient, for example, is cheddar cheese, which you add to the dough instead of sugar. These savory scones are delicious with cream cheese or homemade tomato jam for a unique and challenging snack.

Let's get started!

If there's one thing we can learn from making our own scones, it's that culinary adventures are endless. Whether you're a beginner or a seasoned chef, making your own scones is easy and offers plenty of room for creativity.
