There's nothing that fills your home with a delightful, welcoming aroma like the smell of freshly baked bread. Not only does this scent make your home incredibly cozy, it also offers a healthier alternative to prepackaged bread. Good to know: baking your own bread is a wonderful experience, especially once you've mastered the tricks of the trade. Read on and discover the satisfaction of baking your own bread!

What is bread anyway?

Bread is a staple in everyone's diet. It's made from flour—primarily wheat—mixed with water. Yeast is usually added to this simple mixture, which makes the dough rise and gives the bread its soft, spongy texture. Salt, sugar, milk, and butter are often added for added flavor and texture. Bread is generally eaten with butter or spreads, as part of a meal or as a snack. You can vary it endlessly by adding different types of flour, seeds, nuts, fruits, or herbs.

How do you make bread?

Baking bread starts with activating the yeast. You do this by mixing it with a little warm water and sugar. Then add the remaining ingredients and mix everything together until a dough forms. Then, knead the dough into a smooth ball and let it rise. Once risen, knead the dough again and shape it into the desired shape. Then, bake the bread in the oven until golden brown and cooked through. Did your bread not rise ? Then check out our blog post about it! Or perhaps you forgot to add yeast ? We've written a helpful blog post about that too.

How do you store bread?

Freshly baked bread is the absolute best! But how do you store it if you have any leftovers? It's best to keep bread in a breadbox or a sealed plastic bag. Avoid the refrigerator, as this can dry out the bread. If you want to freeze bread, slice it first. This way, you can defrost as many slices as you need. Besides the satisfaction you get from baking your own bread, there are even more advantages. You know exactly which ingredients are in it, you can vary endlessly with flavors and textures, and perhaps most importantly: it tastes so much better.
